A town on a county line
Kannapolis sits across the Cabarrus and Rowan county line, and that matters for a well: the side of the line you live on decides which health department issues the permit and samples a new well. Most of the city is on municipal water, but the farms and newer homes around the edges, out toward Landis, China Grove and Enochville, still run on private wells, and so do plenty of older homes that were never tied in.
What’s under the yard
Dig anywhere here and you hit the Piedmont’s red clay, then a layer of weathered rock that crumbles in your hand (geologists call it saprolite), then hard rock. A drilled well is cased through the clay and weathered rock and sealed into solid rock; the water comes from cracks in that rock, not from an underground lake. Two wells a few hundred feet apart can hit very different amounts of water, which is why local drilling experience counts.
The calls that come in most
Pumps that have slowly lost pressure, switches that click on and off, pressure tanks that have lost their air, and older well houses with pipes that freeze in a hard cold snap. Their own blog put it plainly: most of the work is pump repair and maintenance.
Permits and rules
New wells, well repairs and well abandonment need a permit from the county health department before work starts: Cabarrus Health Alliance on the Cabarrus side and Rowan County Environmental Health on the Rowan side. After a new well is finished, North Carolina requires the health department to sample it for bacteria and minerals.
GraniteQuestions from Kannapolis
Local answers.
Which county permits a well in Kannapolis?
It depends on which side of the Cabarrus–Rowan line the property is on. Cabarrus Health Alliance issues well permits in Cabarrus County; Rowan County Environmental Health issues them in Rowan County. Your tax bill or deed shows the county.
Do wells in Kannapolis hit water in clay or in rock?
In rock. The red clay and weathered rock near the surface are cased off and sealed; the water comes from fractures in the bedrock below. That keeps surface water out of the well.
My house is on a well but my neighbors are on city water. Is that unusual?
Not around Kannapolis. Many homes on the outskirts and in older neighborhoods still use private wells. If you keep the well, keep it tested and maintained.
